For years, buying the JR Pass was an automatic yes for almost any multi-city Japan trip. That changed after the major October 2023 price increase pushed the 7-day Ordinary Pass from roughly ¥29,650 to ¥50,000 — and the math genuinely shifted as a result. For a lot of common itineraries, including the classic Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka route, individual tickets now cost less than the pass.

Add each round-trip route you're planning, and we'll total the cost of buying individual tickets versus a JR Pass.
Fares shown are standard reserved-seat Ordinary car one-way prices for the most common route between each city pair, doubled for round trip. Actual prices vary slightly by exact stations and train type (Nozomi/Mizuho require a supplement not covered by the JR Pass). Use this for planning, not as a final booking price.
The classic route usually loses money on the pass now
A standard Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip with one round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto typically costs around ¥28,000–29,000 in individual tickets — well under the ¥50,000 pass price. The pass only starts winning once you add genuine long-distance legs, roughly equivalent to a Tokyo–Hiroshima round trip or further.
The JR Pass doesn't cover the fastest trains
Nozomi and Mizuho services — the fastest Shinkansen on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines — aren't included in the standard JR Pass. Pass holders ride the slightly slower Hikari or Sakura instead, or pay a separate supplement to use Nozomi/Mizuho. This doesn't change cost comparisons much, but it's worth knowing if travel time matters to you.
Check regional passes before the nationwide pass
If your trip stays within one region — Kansai, Tohoku, or Kyushu, for example — a regional JR pass is often significantly cheaper than the nationwide pass and didn't see the same steep price increases. Worth checking before defaulting to the nationwide option.
Prices are rising again from October 2026
A further price increase of roughly 5-6% takes effect from October 1, 2026, for passes purchased through travel agencies and overseas sales channels. As of now, the official japanrailpass.net site is holding current pricing for direct purchases — worth buying through the official channel if your travel dates allow it.
