Sapporo Snow Festival 2027: Official Dates, Three Sites and Otaru

Updated 2 October 2026 · 9 min read · Written by CH Chris Hartley

The Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 is scheduled for 4–11 February 2027 at Odori, Tsudome and Susukino, according to the organiser's 13 July 2026 announcement. Entry to the three main sites is free. Start with central Odori for large snow sculptures, use an evening for Susukino's ice displays, and reserve a separate daytime slot for Tsudome's snow-play site. Otaru's Snow Light Path overlaps on 6–13 February 2027.

Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 dates: what is confirmed

The organising committee's 2027 announcement gives an eight-day festival, Thursday 4 February to Thursday 11 February, across all three venues. Its current site and FAQ repeat those dates. The committee also says 2027 information will be updated in stages. As of 2 October 2026, several venue pages still display detailed 2026 sculpture or event descriptions below their 2027 date headings. Do not plan a 2027 performance or installation from those older sections.

Tsudome4–11 February; official site lists 10:00–16:00Snow play and family timeSeparate journey from the central sites

The organiser's FAQ says admission to all three is free. An individual ride, activity, food stall or journey may cost extra, and Tsudome can stop admitting people to an attraction early when busy. Treat this as a free-entry festival, not a guarantee that every experience costs nothing. The central sculpture route is in a public park, but its winter surfaces still call for careful walking.

Use the 2027 dates, not a 2026 programme

The organiser has confirmed the 2027 dates and broad site plan. On 2 October 2026, its detailed venue pages still label some content as 2026 material and say 2027 details will be updated around mid-December. Recheck the official map, opening times and individual events nearer departure.

Odori, Susukino and Tsudome are different trips

Odori stretches through central Sapporo's park from west block 1 to west block 11. The 2027 outline plans five large snow sculptures, smaller works, attractions and an international snow-sculpture contest. You can cover a chosen section instead of walking the entire length in one cold spell. The venue page lists illumination until 22:00, making a daylight walk and a shorter return after dark possible. Specific sculpture themes remain subject to the later programme.

Susukino is the ice-sculpture site on the central station road, from south 4th to south 6th streets. It suits a separate evening after a warm meal or a quick return from Odori. The page currently shows 2026 pedestrianisation and contest details under the 2027 date; do not rely on those old street-closure hours. Use the 2027 venue notice for the final traffic and viewing plan.

Tsudome is the snow-activity venue at the Sapporo Community Dome. Its live site lists 10:00–16:00 during the 2027 dates and gives the Toho subway line's Sakaemachi Station followed by about a 15-minute walk. Unlike the two central sites, it needs its own outbound and return journey. Snow play and indoor rest areas make it a useful family option, but activities can close or require payment even though general admission is free.

If you have only one short visit, prioritise Odori and perhaps Susukino rather than trying to force all three venues into a single evening. The broader Japan festivals guide helps place Sapporo among other winter events. The nearby early-February Setsubun celebrations are a separate tradition, with their own dates and locations.

Where to stay and when to book

For a first visit, search around Odori, Sapporo Station and Susukino. Odori minimises the central sculpture walk; Sapporo Station is useful for airport and Otaru rail connections; Susukino suits an evening ice visit and dining. Look at the actual walking route from the station exit to your accommodation, especially if pulling luggage over winter pavement. A hotel beside Tsudome is unnecessary for most visitors because it is a daytime side trip.

The organiser has already set 4–11 February, so you can book transport and accommodation against official dates. There is no authoritative fixed rule that rooms must be booked a given number of months ahead; prices and availability vary by property. If your plans may change, compare cancellation and payment deadlines before choosing a cheaper non-refundable rate. Staying outside central Sapporo can lower a quoted room price but adds winter travel time at the start and end of each visit.

Plan food and warm-up stops around the outdoor schedule. A full daytime walk plus an evening return can mean hours in below-freezing conditions. JMA's 1991–2020 Sapporo February mean is −2.7°C, a climate normal rather than a festival forecast. Bring grippy, water-resistant footwear and layers you can remove indoors. The seasonal Japan guide gives context for extending the trip beyond Hokkaido.

Ice underfoot is part of the plan

Use shoes or boots with dependable winter grip, walk slowly on polished snow and budget time for station stairs and crossings. Festival-site safety notices include advice on preventing falls. Cold-weather clothing does little good if the footwear is slick or soaked.

Add Otaru's Snow Light Path on an overlapping day

The Otaru Tourism Association announced the 2027 小樽雪あかりの路 (Otaru Yuki Akari no Michi, Snow Light Path) for 6–13 February. That creates an overlap with Sapporo on 6–11 February. The association said on 9 June 2026 that detailed arrangements would follow, so the 2027 venue map and nightly schedule were not yet confirmed in the page checked 2 October. The safe plan is to choose an overlapping date now, then refine the evening route once Otaru publishes its programme.

JR Hokkaido operates trains between Sapporo and Otaru on the corridor also used by some airport services. Search a specific train and last return for your date; the time to the light displays includes the walk from Otaru Station. If a winter delay or long dinner could make a late return uncomfortable, consider sleeping in Otaru or returning before the final service. Otaru is an addition to Sapporo, not a fourth Sapporo festival venue.

One workable two-day outline

Use the first day for Odori in daylight and a short Susukino visit after dark. On the second, visit Tsudome in its daytime hours or travel to Otaru for the light event. Choose between those options according to your group and the published 2027 programmes; both need extra transport.

What remains to check before departure

  1. Confirm any updated notice on the organiser's 2027 page, especially the detailed venue map and activity times.
  2. Check your chosen hotel's station exit and its cancellation terms.
  3. Look up current subway and JR times for Tsudome or Otaru, including the return after dark.
  4. Check Sapporo's forecast and prepare footwear for snow or ice.
  5. For Otaru, use the tourism association's 2027 schedule once the detailed event information appears.

Those checks turn an announced festival date into a realistic cold-weather itinerary. Keep the official 2027 pages as the final authority if an event or venue arrangement changes before February.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Sapporo Snow Festival in 2027?

The organising committee announced 4–11 February 2027, eight days, for all three main venues: Odori, Tsudome and Susukino. Its 13 July 2026 notice is the official 2027 edition, and the current site repeats the dates. The detailed sculpture and event programmes were still being updated when checked on 2 October 2026, so confirm those nearer travel.

Do I need tickets for the Sapporo Snow Festival?

No for general entry to the three main festival sites. The organiser’s FAQ says admission to all venues is free. Particular activities, food, transport and any paid attractions can still cost money; do not interpret free site admission as an all-inclusive pass. Check the 2027 programme once activity-level details are published before planning a paid experience.

Which Sapporo Snow Festival site is best for first-time visitors?

Odori is the best starting point if you want the large snow sculptures and a central-city walk. Susukino focuses on ice sculptures and is convenient for an evening visit. Tsudome has snow-play activities and indoor rest space, but is away from the central two sites and has published 10:00–16:00 hours. The official 2027 programme is still being filled in.

Can I visit Otaru during the Sapporo Snow Festival?

Yes. The Otaru Tourism Association announced its 2027 Snow Light Path for 6–13 February, overlapping Sapporo’s 4–11 February festival. JR Hokkaido shows a direct rail corridor between Sapporo and Otaru. Check the train timetable for the date, especially the last return after an evening light display. Otaru’s detailed 2027 venue programme had not yet been published on 2 October 2026.

Where should I stay for the Sapporo Snow Festival?

For the central sites, accommodation around Odori, Sapporo Station or Susukino makes it easier to return indoors between visits. Tsudome is a separate trip via the Toho subway line and a walk from Sakaemachi, so a hotel beside Tsudome is rarely necessary for a first visit. Book once your dates are fixed and compare cancellation terms; festival-week availability can tighten.
