Japanese Language School Cost per Year: 2027 Fees and Real Budgets

Updated 3 October 2026 · 9 min read · Written by PD Priya Desai

Japanese language school cost per year has two parts: the school's first-year academic bill and 12 months of living expenses. Published April 2027 fees from the examples below are ¥905,000–¥1,115,000 for the first year; the official Study in Japan living-cost benchmark is ¥105,000 per month nationally, based on JASSO's 2023 survey. At that benchmark, a one-year plan is roughly ¥2.17m–¥2.38m before airfare, housing setup and extra exams. Your actual city and housing choice can change it substantially.

Compare the same year and the same fee basis

A 2026 school price can understate April 2027 charges. Akamonkai explicitly raised its fees from April 2027; ISI's long-term manual labels its 2027–28 prices. The TCJ page below is current as checked 3 October 2026 but does not label a 2027 fee edition, so obtain its April 2027 invoice before budgeting from it.

What is the Japanese language school cost per year in 2027?

The school examples show a first-year academic bill of ¥905,000–¥1,115,000 for April 2027 at ISI, with Akamonkai at ¥915,000. These totals include different items, so use the breakdown rather than tuition alone. The table reports the named school's amount and edition, not a nationwide price range. It does not include rent, groceries, airfare or any external JLPT/EJU fee.

At ISI, the academic Japanese April intake is normally a two-year track even though the table gives the first year's bill. Do not interpret the annual fee as proof that a one-year April course exists at that campus. Compare the school's actual April intake and the payment schedule in the current manual.

What should a one- or two-year budget include?

Budget academic charges and everyday living separately, then add moving and travel costs that are specific to you. The official Study in Japan page reports ¥105,000 a month as the national student average excluding academic fees, drawn from a 2023 JASSO survey; its 2025–26 guide shows Tokyo at ¥130,000. These are survey benchmarks, not guaranteed rent quotes or a fixed visa minimum.

The Akamonkai second-year payment is ¥820,000, due about 11 months after enrollment, making its school total ¥1,735,000. The table's subtotal excludes flights, move-in deposit, furniture, residence setup, external exams and any currency-transfer charges. Replace the survey living benchmark with your own rent and food estimate using the Japan monthly budget guide. If using a dorm fee, count it within housing rather than adding it on top of a full living allowance.

How much sponsor money must you show for a student COE?

There is no universal ¥2 million number in the official Study in Japan COE guidance. It says immigration or the embassy may ask for a sponsor's balance certificate, recent income certificate and evidence of the funds' origin. Individual schools set document expectations: one Akamonkai checklist explicitly asks for a ¥2 million-plus bank balance, while ISI's 2027 manual asks for enough to cover the period of study without naming one fixed yen amount.

A balance certificate is evidence at a point in time, not a substitute for the full projected budget. ISI asks for the sponsor's bank certificate dated within three months, employment/income records and transaction history explaining how funds accumulated. Read the student COE sequence before paying fees or relying on a scholarship you have not been awarded. Ask the school which sponsor documents apply to your nationality and sponsor relationship.

Can part-time work reduce the amount you need upfront?

Work can supplement living money after arrival, but should not be the funding source assumed for admission. The official Study in Japan guidance requires permission to work outside Student status and normally caps work at 28 hours per week during term. It warns that part-time earnings do not pay all academic and living expenses. Hours are not a guaranteed wage or a visa-funding exemption.

If you qualify for a school-nominated award, the JASSO Honors language-institute stipend is ¥30,000 per month, but nomination slots are limited. Treat it as a possible later offset, not money you already possess when preparing the COE file.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Japanese language school cost per year in 2027?

The published first-year academic charges in the selected April 2027 examples run from ¥905,000 at ISI Nagano to ¥1,115,000 at ISI Shinjuku Prime. Akamonkai’s revised April 2027 first-year total is ¥915,000. These are examples, not the national minimum or maximum. Living costs, travel, move-in charges and external exam fees sit on top.

Is ¥2 million enough to study Japanese in Japan for one year?

Only in some cases. It depends on the school, city and what the ¥2 million must cover. A worked example using ISI Nagano’s ¥905,000 first-year charge and the official ¥105,000 national monthly living-cost average totals ¥2,165,000 for 12 months before airfare and setup. A ¥2 million balance appears on one school document checklist, but it is not a universal visa threshold or a complete budget.

Can I pay my language-school tuition by working 28 hours a week?

Only partly. Do not build the admission budget around work you have not secured. Student status requires permission for activity outside status before part-time work; the usual term-time limit is 28 hours per week, with a different daily cap during long vacations. The official Study in Japan site says part-time earnings alone do not cover all school and living costs.

Does the school fee include dormitory rent?

Usually check the fee breakdown separately. The ISI 2027 long-term manual lists tuition and enrollment charges in one section and dormitory charges in another. The worked budgets here use a monthly living-cost allowance that includes rent, so do not add a dorm fee again unless replacing that allowance with a custom itemised housing budget.
