JASSO Scholarship for International Students: Language School and EJU Rules

Updated 3 October 2026 · 9 min read · Written by PD Priya Desai

The JASSO scholarship for international students that most private students mean is the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship. It pays ¥48,000 per month at qualifying graduate and undergraduate levels, or ¥30,000 for a qualifying Japanese language institute student aiming for higher education. You ask your enrolled school to nominate you; JASSO does not take a general direct application from students. The EJU and pre-arrival reservation routes are distinct and do not make language-school enrollment alone eligible.

A nomination is not guaranteed

JASSO says each school has a limited recommendation allocation, and a school may have no available nomination. Meeting the published conditions does not guarantee selection. Ask your school for its current internal deadline and the number of slots.

Can Japanese language school students receive a JASSO scholarship?

Yes. The Honors Scholarship explicitly includes Japanese language institute students who intend to advance to a Japanese university, graduate school, junior college, KOSEN or specialised training course. The listed stipend is ¥30,000 monthly, for either April–March or October–March periods. A private language learner with no higher-education goal is outside that stated institute route. Selection still runs through the school.

The 36-award scholarship comparison separates local and foundation opportunities from JASSO. The listed amount is a stipend, not a promise that it will cover April 2027 school tuition or COE funds.

How does the JASSO scholarship for international students work?

JASSO requires privately financed students with Student residence status, suitable academic performance and financial need. Ordinary degree-level candidates must meet its language condition, but the page expressly excepts language-institute, university preparatory and preparatory-language students from that subsection. JASSO also sets outside-allowance, domestic-sponsor-income and incompatible-award limits. Your school screens and nominates; you cannot bypass its allocation.

  1. Confirm your institution is eligible and ask its international office whether it has an Honors nomination cycle and internal deadline.
  2. Check your academic category and progression goal against JASSO's current published conditions. Language institute students should ask how the intended degree or vocational progression is documented.
  3. Provide the school's requested grades, attendance, funding and residence-status evidence. JASSO sets an average ¥90,000 monthly outside-allowance cap excluding admission and tuition fees, and a ¥5 million annual-income ceiling for a supporter in Japan.
  4. If nominated and selected, comply with the monthly confirmation at the school's international office and report a change in enrollment or status.

For standard degree-level applicants, JASSO lists JLPT N2, EJU Japanese 200, a separately recognised Japanese level, or CEFR B2 English as alternative language evidence. The language-institute exception is explicit in that particular condition; do not incorrectly impose N2 on that group. The school's own admission requirements are a separate question.

When is the EJU, and how much is the 2026 fee?

JASSO's current 2026 schedule lists EJU on 21 June and 8 November. The November application period was 6–30 July 2026 and is already closed as of 3 October. For tests administered in Japan, the 2026 fee is ¥12,000 for one subject or ¥23,000 for two or three subjects, tax included. Overseas fees vary by test location; the 2027 schedule was not posted on the checked page.

The 2026 guideline says the test covers Japanese as a foreign language, Science, Japan and the World, and Mathematics as required by the institution. JASSO's EJU FAQ says universities choose whether and how to use scores and may add an exam or interview. Ask the target programme which subjects and language of testing it accepts before registering.

How does the November 2026 EJU reservation differ from Honors?

The November 2026 reservation is for strong EJU candidates entering specified regular undergraduate, junior-college, KOSEN or professional-training courses between November 2026 and October 2027; graduate and language-institute enrollment alone are excluded. Candidates indicated the scholarship option in the EJU application, which closed in July. A reservation holder must later notify JASSO of the enrolling school and submit the notice there for recommendation.

JASSO's separate pre-arrival reservation is for selected institutions and higher-education courses, and the planned school handles that process. Neither route substitutes for the private school's COE procedure or the MEXT government scholarship. If your goal is to move from language school to university, ask the target university now which EJU session and subjects it accepts.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the JASSO scholarship for a Japanese language school student?

The Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship lists ¥30,000 per month for Japanese language institute students, versus ¥48,000 for eligible graduate and undergraduate levels. The language-school student must intend to progress to a specified higher-education course and satisfy the programme’s other conditions. Ask the enrolled school whether it can nominate you; there is no student-direct application.

Does a language-school student need JLPT N2 to get JASSO Honors?

No. JASSO’s main Honors page explicitly exempts students in Japanese language institutes, university preparatory courses and preparatory Japanese programmes from the listed N2, EJU 200-point or CEFR B2 language-condition subsection. They still need the other scholarship conditions and school nomination. That exception does not remove language requirements for university admission.

Can I get a JASSO scholarship before arriving in Japan?

Yes, potentially through a JASSO reservation route for eligible pre-arrival admission to a listed higher-education programme, or through the EJU reservation route. These are not a general pre-arrival language-school stipend. The planned Japanese institution handles the pre-arrival reservation route; ask it whether its current programme is registered and what deadline it uses.

Is the November 2026 EJU application still open in October?

No. JASSO scheduled the November 8, 2026 EJU but closed applications for that session on July 30, 2026. The November 2026 scholarship reservation was selected in that EJU application. A test date being in the future does not make registration open. Check JASSO for the next published EJU schedule.
