Scholarships for international students in Japan span government awards, school-nominated JASSO stipends, local grants, foundations and university tuition reductions. This table compares 36 awards in 37 rows by amount, eligible study level, application window, route and dated source. It also identifies awards whose current listing explicitly includes Japanese language institute students. A listed month is not an open call: verify the funder's current annual notice before applying.
Check the current call before applying
Most private and local rows come from organisation-supplied entries in the official Study in Japan search database, updated 19 August 2026 and checked 3 October 2026. The database itself says to confirm latest details with the school or funder. The month ranges below are listed windows, not verified 2027 deadlines. MEXT and university rows name their actual edition.
Which scholarships for international students in Japan can you compare now?
The 37 rows below comprise four published MEXT 2027 categories, three JASSO programmes, two university fee waivers and 27 distinct local or foundation entries. Selection favours varied funding routes and eight private/local listings that explicitly include language institutes; it is a practical sample, not a ranking or exhaustive inventory. Each row links its own source and carries the check date.

Which awards can a Japanese language school student actually pursue?
Start with JASSO Honors: its ¥30,000 monthly language-institute tier requires a privately financed Student resident who aims to continue into Japanese higher education, plus school nomination and other conditions. Eight of the 27 sampled local or foundation listings also explicitly include Japanese language institutions. That does not mean every school can nominate students or every annual call is open.
In the table, “language institute” means the source's academic-level field explicitly lists Japanese language institutions. Other awards may support university preparatory courses, but this is not the same category. Ask your school's international office which programmes it can nominate for, and compare your intake deadline with each award's current year notice.
How should you read the listed deadline windows?
Read a listed window as the month in the source record, not as a promised 2027 opening. A school-nominated scholarship can have an internal deadline earlier than the funder's date; a direct-application foundation can narrow nationality, age or field in its current call. Begin at the row's source, then check the funder's newest edition and ask the administering office for the exact date and form.
- Filter the table by study level and the language-institute label before comparing amounts.
- Open the row's dated source; note the named funder, award and listed application route.
- Search that funder's own site for its newest 年度 call or ask the scholarship office. Use the current PDF, not an old search snippet.
- Confirm nationality, field, age, enrollment, attendance, financial need and overlap restrictions in that call.
- For a school route, ask when your school closes nominations; for MEXT use the relevant embassy or university route in the 2027 MEXT guide.
What if you need a scholarship before entering Japan?
Look first at rows explicitly marked pre-arrival or the published 2027 MEXT category guidelines. Many JASSO and local awards require you to enroll and then seek school nomination, so they cannot safely fund the original visa application. Check whether the award pays tuition, living costs or both, and make a separate budget using your school's actual fee schedule and the sponsor-document rules.
A scholarship is not a visa or funding guarantee
Listed eligibility and a month window only tell you where to investigate. Financial-evidence rules for admission and the COE still apply unless the school and immigration accept the award documents. Do not rely on an expected nomination as proof of funds.
Frequently asked questions
Can Japanese language school students get a scholarship in Japan?
Yes, but only where that award explicitly includes language institute students and you satisfy its other conditions. JASSO Honors lists ¥30,000 per month for qualifying language institute students aiming to enter higher education. The 2026 Study in Japan database also lists several local and private awards that include language institutes. Ask your school whether it participates and whether its current call is open.
Can I apply directly to JASSO for the Honors Scholarship?
No. JASSO says applicants ask the school where they are enrolled. Schools have limited recommendation quotas, so meeting the baseline does not ensure a nomination. The EJU reservation route uses a separate EJU application and is for later degree or professional-training enrollment, not language school enrollment alone.
Are the listed scholarship windows guaranteed for 2027?
No. Organisation-supplied database entries checked on 3 October 2026 were updated on 19 August 2026; a month range is a discovery aid, not a confirmed 2027 deadline. Use the linked row to identify the funder, then obtain its current annual call or ask the school before spending time on an application.
Do MEXT scholarships cover a private language school?
No standalone private language-school award appears in the published 2027 MEXT embassy categories listed here. Preparatory Japanese can be part of a funded research, undergraduate, KOSEN or specialised-training award. If your plan is only a private language institute, check JASSO Honors and the explicitly eligible local or foundation listings.
